Born into a wealthy family, Naseem was enchanted by movies as a young girl and became determined to be an actress. She was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2009. The legendary singer of Hindi film industry, Shamshad Begum is still with us today living at Hiranandani Gardens, Powai in Bombay. In 1998 there came a rumor that India’s famous singer Shamshad Begum had died (only this Shamshad Begum happened to be actress Naseem Banu’s mother and Saira Banu’s grandmother, and a classical music singer). Her crystal toned, nasal voice created history from 1940s to mid 1960s. Shamshad Begum was graciously beautiful woman in her youth. Many music directors were rushing to sign her for their films. But with the entry of Shamshad Begum the scenario changed. At that time another singer Amirbai Karnataki was the topmost female singer in Industry. Shamshad Begum lent her voice for Ghulam Haider in director Mehboob Khan’s historical venture Humayun in 1944. In 1944, she moved to Bombay along with composer Ghulam Haider as a part of his team. AIR Lahore used to broadcast her songs repeatedly, which caught music directors’ attention and lured them to use her voice in films. Her radio work helped her to enter into the film industry. Along with this group she performed in stage shows and also for All India Radio (AIR). She was part of a musical group ‘The Crown Imperial Theatrical Company of Performing Arts’, which was formed in Delhi. Later she also started working for Lahore Radio in 1937. NASEEM BANU MOTHER SHAMSHAD BEGUM TVWhile Saira’s TV show Stree Teri Kahani on DD is ruling for two years now, another thing which she’s keen about is Dilip’s autobiography! “Bhagwan ek jagah baithen, to hum unki pooja karein!” she sighs, lamenting the lack of leisure needed for the project.“I want to concentrate on aspects of his childhood and personal incidents,” she says.Shamshad Begum is one of the first singers of Indian film industry. Saira recalls those days when the superstar couple would be pursued by hysterical fans, “Once in Kolkata, I remember fans lifted the car in which we were seated!” Away from the limelight today, Saira finds taking ‘the daily walk or the drive at sunset or attending a special event’ with Dilip more momentous. There are beautiful recollections associated with it.” But the onus of looking after this place has been a part of my life. Friends often suggest that I should move into a big flat rather than continue living in this huge bungalow (referring to their bungalow at Pali Hill). I don’t want to be remembered either,” discloses Saira adding, “My good memories are my lifeline-they help me surge ahead. But I could never have danced the way Vyjyanthimala did,” she confesses. Also, the script of Jewel Thief was rewritten twice for me. Today I realise that I was too young to play Kishore Sahu’s wife in Guide and emote with the maturity Waheedaji (Rehman) did. But I was supposed to start Mehboob Khan’s Habba Khatoon (based on the love story of the Sufi poetess). “Ted Danielsky (director of the English version of Guide) came to me with the film’s Hindi version. The premier forbearer of the ‘beauty queen’ title, Saira surrendered around 35 projects after she got married to superstar Dilip Kumar. I don’t wish to load myself with them,” adding, “The regrets of yesterday and the fears of tomorrow shouldn’t spoil my today.” But even as I do, I’m erasing out the hurts and the tribulations (referring to Dilip’s second marriage to Asma) from my memories. She muses, “When I retrospect, I feel enriched with the life that I’ve led with my family (referring to her late grandmother Shamshad Begum Waheed Khan and mother Naseem Banu) and husband. Reason? “Sahab (referring to husband and thespian Dilip Kumar) had viral fever.” Last week Saira Banu celebrated her birthday with ‘khamoshi’.
